Now a new film, it’s time to return to the source material. Austen is as ever, a keen observer of human nature and her witty dialog is the rival of Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward. The plot, is as ever, about women falling between classes, needing ‘a good match’ to survive in the unfair world they inhabit. Given the post-revolutionary times Austen wrote in, she might have secretly wished to have a ’good match’ in which to burn the whole edifice down. Russell says check it out. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a22c2078438bd3f78bdb99f/394c1e1c-4d13-4387-8554-e019f06dc24d/IMG_0531.jpeg Gallery Liz's choice : The story of Arundhati Roy, her childhood and early adulthood as her mother's "shelter and her storm". It is a completely raw ,honest and beautifully written memoir that reads like a novel. It taught me a lot about the politics of India, being a Syrian Christian (albeit a non practicing one) in a predominantly Hindu nation whose racism was and is mostly aimed at Muslims. It linked to my memories of The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese, an epic of a book set in the same area that Arundhati grew up, which I half listened to and half read. I highly recommend it as an example of compassion, brilliant prose and history.
